DVS information and Privacy notice

How Global Data uses the Document Verification Service

How we use the DVS

When you use IDPass to verify your identity, Global Data uses the Document Verification Service (DVS) to confirm, with your consent, that the information on your identity document matches the original record held by the document issuer.

The DVS is a secure service operated by the Australian Government and enables us to verify documents directly with the issuers of those documents, such as state road authorities for driver licences or the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade for passports.

Global Data is an approved Identity Service Provider (IDSP) and Gateway Service Provider (GSP) under the Identity Verification Services Act 2023. When a business engages us to verify your identity, we access the DVS on their behalf and provide them with information on whether your identity has been verified.

Our obligations

In verifying your identity document, Global Data complies with:

  • the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles;
  • the Identity Verification Services Act 2023 (Cth); and
  • our Participation Agreement with the Attorney-General’s Department.

We will only submit your information to the DVS with your express consent, and we will only use that information for the purpose of verifying your identity for the business that has requested the verification.

We retain information related to DVS checks only for as long as we are legally required to, and we ensure that our staff are trained in their privacy and security obligations before using the DVS.

We will not disclose your information to third parties unless legally required to do so, or with your express consent.

Your rights

You have the right to refuse consent to the use of the DVS. You also have the right to access and request correction of the personal information Global Data holds about you, in accordance with the Privacy Act.

What happens if you decline

If you decline to consent, Global Data cannot verify your identity through IDPass. The business that requested your verification may offer an alternative method to verify your identity, or may not be able to provide you with the services or products you have requested.
