UK Companies House

UK Business Check API

UK Business Check returns a snapshot of a UK company from its Companies House number in a single call: the profile, status, registered office and previous names, together with the officer changes and filings of the last 12 months. It is the UK counterpart of the Australian Business Check.

  • One request, one reply, no polling: the Companies House profile, officers and filing history combined into a single record
  • Officers appointed or resigned and filings made in the last 12 months, so the record shows recent activity rather than the full history

What the check gives you

Confirming a UK company exists, is active, and what has changed recently

Onboarding a UK supplier or customer starts with confirming the company is real and active. UK Business Check takes the Companies House number and returns the company's profile with what has changed in the last 12 months, in one synchronous call. Where the full record is needed, Company House Report is the call to use.

What the company is

The company number, registered name, status such as active, dissolved, liquidation or dormant, the type, jurisdiction, dates of incorporation and cessation, the registered office and the SIC codes.

What it used to be called

The previous names the company has used, each with the dates it applied from and ceased.

Officer changes in the last 12 months

Officers appointed or resigned in the last 12 months, with their role and dates. Long-standing officers with no change in that period are not listed, so this is a list of changes rather than the current board.

Filings in the last 12 months

Filings dated within the last 12 months, newest first, each with its form type, category, description and a document ID for Company House Document where one is available.

How a check runs

One call, answered in the same response

Your system sends the 8-character company number. Companies House is queried and the combined record comes back in the same response, with no polling.

A well-formed number that Companies House has no record of returns an empty match. That is still a billable attempt.

Reading the result

What each answer means for the subject in front of you

The match is either the company record or empty. The status inside the record says whether the company is trading.

Found

The company is on the register

The match carries the profile, previous names, SIC codes and the last 12 months of officer changes and filings. Read the status: dissolved, liquidation and dormant companies are returned too.

Not found

Companies House holds no record

The number was well-formed but Companies House has no record of it. The match is returned as an empty array and the attempt is billed.

What it costs

A monthly subscription, drawn down as you run checks

Your subscription is credited to your account each month and each check consumes credits from it. If you go past the included amount, further checks are charged at a per-check rate. The rate depends on the volume you commit to, so the sales team is the fastest way to find where your business lands.

  • Volume-based pricing
  • No lock-in contract
How billing works
Subscribe monthly, spend it as credits
  • The monthly subscription arrives as credits on your account.
  • Each check draws down credits as it runs.
  • Checks beyond the included credits are billed per check.
  • Higher monthly volume moves you to a lower rate.

Questions

Questions we get asked about UK Business Check

Do we need a developer to implement this?
Yes. UK Business Check is a REST endpoint that takes a JSON request and returns a JSON record, so a developer connects it to your onboarding or KYB process. A sandbox with a deterministic test dataset is provided at no usage cost, so the integration can be built and tested before production keys are issued.
What does our system need to send?
The 8-character UK Companies House company number. Most are numeric with leading zeros, such as 01234567; Scottish, Northern Irish, LLP and other registrations carry a two-letter prefix, such as SC123456, NI012345 or OC301234.
Why does the officer list not show the whole board?
Officers and filings are limited to the last 12 months so the response reflects recent activity. The officers array holds only officers appointed or resigned in that period. For the current board and the full history, order a Company House Report.
What comes back?
A match object with the company profile, registered office, previous names, SIC codes, the officers changed in the last 12 months and the filings of the last 12 months, newest first. An empty array where the number is not known to Companies House.
How is this billed?
Each check is billed as an attempt, including a well-formed number that Companies House has no record of. Rates are set out in your commercial agreement.
Where does the data come from?
The Companies House company profile, officers and filing history, combined into one record. The sandbox uses fixed test companies whose officer and filing dates may fall outside the 12-month window.
Are the company numbers we send stored by Global Data?
Personally identifiable information sent in a request is not stored or retained unless it is needed to process that request. Query data is stripped of PII before it is kept for audit. Data in transit and at rest is encrypted, and retention follows the Australian Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles. Global Data is not a credit bureau and does not create an access footprint on any record.
Getting started

The first step to access is a conversation

New accounts begin with sandbox access, and production API keys are issued once the account has been commercially approved.
