ASIC Extract Company Search finds a company on the ASIC register from its name, ABN or ACN and returns the identifiers an ASIC Extract order requires. A name search can be narrowed by registration status, postcode or state, so the right company is chosen before an extract is billed.

What the check gives you

Finding the right company before ordering its extract

An extract is ordered by ABN or ACN, and a customer often supplies only a name. ASIC Extract Company Search takes whichever you hold, finds the matching companies on the ASIC register and returns their identifiers. Filters on registration status and location keep a common name to a short list. Where the ABN or ACN is already known the search is optional, because ASIC Extract accepts either directly.

The identifiers an extract needs

Each match carries the identifier, usually the ACN, and the ABN with the ABR entity name, type and effective date. Either number is accepted by ASIC Extract.

One record for a number, a list for a name

An ABN or ACN search returns a single match or an empty list. A name search can return several companies, up to the number requested, with a more_results flag when ASIC reported more than were returned.

Registered or deregistered

A name search can be limited to registered companies, to deregistered companies, or left to return both. The filter is ignored for number searches, which already return one company.

Registered office location

A name search can be limited to companies whose registered office is in a given postcode or state. A postcode search also includes neighbouring postcodes, and where both are supplied only the postcode is applied.

Questions we get asked about the company search

Do we need a developer to implement this?

Yes. The search is a REST call whose results feed the ASIC Extract order, so a developer connects it to your system alongside the extract workflow. A sandbox with four deterministic test companies is provided at no usage cost, so the flow can be built and tested before production keys are issued.

What does our system need to send?

A search value of up to 100 characters: a company name, an 11-digit ABN or a 9-digit ACN. Letter case is ignored for names and spacing is ignored for numbers. For a name search, optionally a maximum number of results from 1 to 90, which defaults to 20, a status of registered, deregistered or all, and a postcode or a state code such as VIC or NSW.

What comes back?

A list of matching companies, each carrying the identifier and the ABN plus the ASIC attributes available for it, and a more_results flag. For a number search the list holds one company or is empty.

Do we have to search before ordering an extract?

No. ASIC Extract needs only the ABN or ACN. The company search is provided as a convenience for finding that number from a name. This differs from person extracts, which always require ASIC Extract Person Search first.

Where does the data come from?

Matches are drawn from the company register maintained by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission. The ABN details describe the company on the Australian Business Register. The reference documentation does not state a refresh cycle.

Is the search we send stored by Global Data?

Personally identifiable information sent in a request is not stored or retained unless it is needed to process that request. Query data is stripped of PII before it is kept for audit. Data in transit and at rest is encrypted, and retention follows the Australian Privacy Act and the Australian Privacy Principles.

How many searches can we run?

The API allows 600 requests per minute by default, measured as a rolling average, and returns a 429 response above that rate. A higher limit can be requested through Global Data support.
